Improve Your Relationship With Yourself | Self-Improvement Coaching

Holding on to what you cannot change is like wrestling with your shadow. It makes for a frustrating relationship with yourself. The shadow is visible, but you will be continually frustrated and unhappy because you cannot control or change it.

In your business and personal world, you must know when you are wrestling with your shadow. Your shadow is all the things you cannot control.

In my personal business coaching in The Woodlands and Houston, very often I have clients that are wrestling with shadows.  I have certainly wrestled with shadows.  My shadows can be doubt, indecision, and timidity to name a few.  They are valid as long as I wrestle with them.  The moment I let go, stop wrestling with them, they lose their power to distort the picture I have of myself and my world.

How do I let go?  First, what I am about to share does not always work.  But when you have a method for dealing with your shadows you start having confidence which brings a greater degree of happiness.  That alone puts me in a better place.

To get rid of my shadows, I journal.  I get deep inside myself to discover what is truly driving my fear, the fear that creates shadows.  My biggest challenge is to borrow trouble and turmoil in the future before it ever arrives.  One of the things I journal about is the present and all I have to be grateful for.  When I am grateful, I feel better, more at peace, and am willing, now that my foundation feels more solid, to overcome my doubts, indecisiveness, and timidity.

Overcoming your shadows is an inside job.  Be truthful with yourself.  It is the only place to start. Journaling helps me do that.

Some of the happiest moments in your life will come when you let go of wrestling with your shadows. Show the courage to let go.  How do you do that?

Face the sunlight.  Face what you are grateful for. When you do, you put the shadows behind you, in the past, and you are now positioned to grow.  And with your shadow behind you, you are positioned to improve your relationship with yourself and with others.

Faucets and drains | Personal development business coach Houston

Faucets and drains are two things designed to work together.  Water comes out of a faucet and goes into a sink.  Once in the sink, it flows toward the drain and goes away.  Or you can stop up the drain and let the sink collect water.  As a personal business coach in The Woodlands and in Houston, I look for the faucets in a business such as cash flow, marketing, advertising, operational and financial processes, administrative and management style, and most importantly, the people. And I also look for the drains.

Interestingly, there are several ways to look at faucets and drains in business.  A company invests a great deal of money in an advertising program.  The money is the faucet.  It pours out into the advertising program.  The advertising program is wildly successful at bringing in new and profitable sales.  The sink, the company’s cash reserves, start to fill up.  The drain, which is the money going out for advertising, is slower than the faucet that is bringing in new sales causing more money to back up in the sink.

This is a good situation.  You have your sink of cash filling up with the money.  In fact, it is filling up with the money to where you could be put into a higher tax bracket in various areas.  Tax brackets are drains.  Or you could put some of that extra money into other drains such as investing in equipment, people, or processes to support and sustain your growth.  And these will reduce your taxes.

But are these really drains?  Or are they new faucets?  It depends. Two businesses can look at the same thing and because of their unique perspectives see things differently.  In the above example, investing money in equipment, people or processes could by some be considered a drain and by others a new faucet.

The key here is not whether one is right or wrong.  The first key is to understand how you look at your business in terms of faucets and drains.  The second key is to be aware of where your perspective on faucets and drains is taking you not just in the present but in the future.  Are you creating the future you desire?

How you choose to identify faucets and drains and how you determine they are going to work together will have a huge impact on you and your business’s success.  True success in business is creating an entity where the faucets and drains work together for growth, long-term stability, or both.

How to Have Your Best Year Yet Part | Leadership Coaching services in houston

In the last post I started with three questions to ask yourself on your path to having your best year yet.

What did I accomplish in the past year? Or what did I accomplish in the last 12 months? You can start having your best year yet at any time.

What were my major disappointments?

 What did I learn?

In my practice, which for the most part is as a personal business coach in The Woodlands, there are different roles I must play to be effective for my clients. Part of what I do is collaborate with them on purely business challenges. That is the business coach role. I may also collaborate with them on personal challenges that can lead to breakthroughs in their business. That is when I do self-improvement business coaching or what some call personal development business coaching.

When focusing on how to have your best year yet all these roles come into play. After all, I believe you must look at the whole situation. It is easy to develop strategies for the business but maybe those strategies don’t fit the leadership style or the person. Then adjustments need to be made as we discover what needs to be addressed. The exciting aspect for my clients and me is that they are not the same person today as they were two weeks or a month ago. When you are involved in the business coaching process, regardless of who you collaborate with, you must be willing to stretch.

So, you have answered the first three questions. I find that these are relatively easy for most people to address. Based on your accomplishments, your disappointments and what you learned, here are the next three.

How do I limit myself and how can I stop? This question, to me, is one of the most challenging. You have to take a deep introspective look at yourself and come to an understanding of how you may limit yourself and how can you stop.

What are my values? As with the other questions, there are no right or wrong answers here. If is important to define your values. It will give you a mirror into how you conduct your business and your life. It will show you your priorities in how you accomplish things.

What roles do I play? This is critical. Identify all the roles you play in your life. Most people are fascinated when they discover all the roles they play?

Once again, write down the answers to these questions. In the next segment we will start putting together the goals to have your best year yet.

Problem or Predicament? | Personal business coach houston

Over the past few weeks, the coronavirus has changed all of our lives significantly.  We have never seen something like this.  The medical impact can be frightening.  And the economic impact, remains to be seen, but it could be disastrous.

Instead of writing about personal development, self-improvement, personal growth and leadership which are areas in which I collaborate with others in my personal business coaching practice, I believe it is best to share some thoughts that may support you as we go through a time where in many cases, and you can include me, our lives have been turned upside down.  A time where fear and panic, the two horsemen of relationship and societal destruction are running wild.

Problem or predicament?  A problem is something that can be readily solved.  For example, I am thirsty.  That is a problem.  I get a glass of water and the problem is solved.  On the other hand, a predicament is a problem we have to endure.

The last few week, with the outbreak and spread of the coronavirus has created unbelievable predicaments!  And more predicaments are coming our way.  At a time like this, accept what is.  In reality, when faced with the unusual, the exception, the event that no one saw coming, that is all you can do, accept it.

Only when you accept what is, will you understand what you must do to be proactive and to keep your sanity.  Peace of mind may be non-existent at this time.  But, do whatever you can to keep your sanity.  You increase the odds of making better decisions to move you through and beyond current circumstances.

This is an unforeseen test for all of us as to how to endure this predicament.

Focus only on what you can control, not on what you cannot.  Worry, and it is valid, is fueled by focusing on things beyond our control.  All of us fear the unknown.  That’s what we have now, fear of the unknown personally and as a country.

The other thing with a predicament is to focus or to find the opportunity within the difficulty.  This may take time. But it will give you purpose and direction.  A ship in a storm only finds the safe harbor when it remembers its purpose for the voyage and the direction it must go in.  You may have to change the direction and the harbor.  That’s okay.  Remember, if you choose, you always have one more move!

Wishing everyone the best and that when the current storm is past that you find your safe harbor!

Overcoming Self-Doubt: Building Confidence and Self-Esteem | Personal business coach houston

Self-doubt can be a formidable barrier to personal growth and happiness. It’s that nagging voice in our heads that questions our abilities and worth. However, with the right mindset and strategies, it’s possible to overcome self-doubt and cultivate confidence and self-esteem.

Challenge Negative Thoughts

Start by becoming aware of negative self-talk. When self-doubt creeps in, challenge those thoughts with evidence of your past successes and capabilities. Replace self-criticism with self-compassion and positive affirmations.

Set Realistic Goals

Break larger goals into smaller, achievable steps. Celebrate your progress along the way, no matter how small. Each accomplishment boosts confidence and reinforces belief in your abilities.

Focus on Strengths

Identify your strengths and talents. Leverage these strengths in areas where you feel confident, and use them as a foundation to tackle challenges and learn new skills.

Embrace Failure as Growth

Shift your perspective on failure. Instead of viewing it as a reflection of your worth, see it as an opportunity to learn and grow. Embrace setbacks as stepping stones toward success.

Surround Yourself with Support

Seek encouragement and support from friends, family, or a mentor. Surrounding yourself with positive influences who believe in you can bolster your confidence and help silence self-doubt.

Practice Self-Care

Take care of your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Engage in activities that nourish your body and mind, such as exercise, mindfulness, hobbies, and quality time with loved ones.

Visualize Success

Use visualization techniques to imagine yourself succeeding and achieving your goals. Visualizing positive outcomes can boost confidence and motivate action.

Positive Relationships: Success can be seen in the quality of relationships with family, friends, and significant others. Maintaining positive and meaningful connections is crucial for many individuals.

Personal Growth and Development: Continuous learning, self-improvement, and personal growth are often integral aspects of success for those who value lifelong development.

Health and Well-Being: Feeling physically and mentally healthy, as well as maintaining a balanced lifestyle, is a measure of success for many.

Discover Your Life’s Mission

In the grand tapestry of life, each of us possesses a unique thread, a purpose that weaves through our existence. This purpose, often referred to as a life mission, is the guiding force that gives our actions meaning and direction. Yet, uncovering this mission can be a profound and transformative journey. In this blog post, we’ll embark on a voyage of self-discovery to help you illuminate your life’s mission and align your actions with your true purpose.

  • Understanding the Essence of a Life Mission : A life mission is more than just a goal or a dream; it’s a deeply ingrained sense of purpose that transcends the ordinary. It encompasses your values, passions, and the impact you want to make on the world. It’s the North Star that guides your decisions and actions, providing a profound sense of fulfillment and direction.
  • Reflecting on Your Values and Beliefs : To unearth your life’s mission, start by reflecting on your core values and beliefs. What principles do you hold dear? What causes or issues ignite a fire within you? Identifying and prioritizing these values will provide a solid foundation for your life’s mission.
  • Passions: The Fuel for Purpose : Consider the activities or pursuits that light a spark in your soul. What do you love doing, regardless of external validation or reward? These passions are often signposts pointing towards your life’s mission. Embrace them, for they are the keys to unlocking your true purpose.
  • Impact: How Do You Want to Change the World? : A life mission often involves making a positive impact on the world, whether it’s through personal connections, community involvement, or broader societal change. Reflect on the kind of legacy you want to leave behind and the mark you want to make on this world.
  • Exploring Your Unique Strengths : Your innate talents and strengths are powerful tools in fulfilling your life’s mission. Identify what you excel at and how these abilities can be leveraged to serve a higher purpose. Understanding your strengths allows you to approach your mission with confidence and effectiveness.
  • Embracing Challenges and Growth : Discovering your life’s mission is not always a linear path. It requires self-reflection, trial and error, and the willingness to step outside of your comfort zone. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, and remember that the journey itself is an integral part of fulfilling your purpose.
  • Aligning Your Actions with Your Mission : With your life’s mission in focus, it’s time to translate it into action. Set clear goals and objectives that resonate with your purpose. Break them down into manageable steps and take consistent action towards their realization.
  • Embracing a Lifelong Journey : Your life’s mission is not a destination but a lifelong journey. It will evolve as you grow, learn, and experience the world. Embrace this evolution and remain open to new opportunities and insights that align with your ever-evolving purpose.

Conclusion: Embrace Your Unique Path

As you embark on the journey to discover your life’s mission, remember that it is a deeply personal and individual quest. Trust in your intuition, honor your values, and have faith in the impact you are destined to make. By uncovering your true purpose, you unlock the potential for a life of profound fulfillment, authenticity, and contribution.

Embark on this journey with an open heart and an adventurous spirit, for your life’s mission is waiting to be discovered. Embrace it, and let it illuminate the path to a life of purpose and meaning.
