The Stages of Team Building | Self-Improvement Coaching

The Tuckman-Jensen analysis of the stages of team building has become a foundational piece in understanding how teams come together or pull apart, how they perform well or fail to meet desired results.

Tuckman and Jensen state that teams go through five stages of team development:

1. Forming—the search for commonalities

2. Storming-breaking away from false harmony into individual power displays, leading to rifts between team members. There is a tension in this stage between unity and individualism.

3. Norming-behavior in this stage is more about consensus between team members and more of a shift from “I” to “We.”

4. Performing-behavior at this stage shows that the members can self-lead. This stage focuses on problem solving and completing assigned tasks.

5. Adjourning-This allows a sense of completion for the team members. Otherwise, there can remain a festering feeling of unfinished business.

All successful teams need to go through these stages. And, time needs to be allowed for the teams to go through these stages. There are two points that need to be emphasized.

Personal Development Training houston | Tips on Self Improvement

Holding on to what you cannot change is like wrestling with your shadow. It makes for a frustrating relationship with yourself. The shadow is visible, but you will be continually frustrated and unhappy because you cannot control or change it.

In your business and personal world, you must know when you are wrestling with your shadow. Your shadow is all the things you cannot control.

In my personal business coaching in The Woodlands and Houston, very often I have clients that are wrestling with shadows.  I have certainly wrestled with shadows.  My shadows can be doubt, indecision, and timidity to name a few.  They are valid as long as I wrestle with them.  The moment I let go, stop wrestling with them, they lose their power to distort the picture I have of myself and my world.

How do I let go?  First, what I am about to share does not always work.  But when you have a method for dealing with your shadows you start having confidence which brings a greater degree of happiness.  That alone puts me in a better place.

Self-Improvement Tips For Success from Personal Development Coach

I must be the best me in order to be the best for everyone else.”-Steve Scott

I like this quotation, not because it is mine, but because it underscores a fundamental truth to self-improvement.  When looking at self-improvement tips for success, which means building your confidence and self-esteem you have to start with yourself.

You have to be the best you in order to be the best for everyone else.  If you are not the best you, or striving for it, what are you giving to others?  You are giving them something average or below average.  No one gets excited about the word “average.”

If people asked you the following questions with these answers ask yourself how motivated you would be to connect, partner or do anything with them.

How’s your life?  Average

How’s your business?  Average

How was your upbringing? Average

How are you doing?  Average

How are your relationships?  Average

How are your children?  Average

I think you get the point.  There is nothing exciting about “average.”  There isn’t anything there that brings, energy, excitement, and most importantly, momentum to ignite the power of creativity, excitement and forward progress.  Here is what is critical.  There is nothing in “average” to attract people who are “above average” into your life.

Life is not a one-man band.  It is about creating partnerships, sharing thinking and exploring new opportunities.  That’s what can make it above average when people see you, not as average, but as someone unique and exceptional.

Washing Machines, Dryers and Relationships | Self Improvement Tips Texas

Washing machines help us clean dirty clothes.  Some of the clothes come out perfectly clean.  Others may still have the remnants of a stain that is now barely visible.  And then there are some clothes where the machine, no matter how you well it cleans, cannot remove the stain.  The stain remains visible to where you will decide to discard that piece of clothing.

Washing machines are also a great metaphor for relationships.  All of us are imperfect.  We have dirt and stains that need to be cleaned up.  As with washing clothes, our relationships need repeated washings to keep them looking good to where they can perform as we need them to.  In my personal business coaching practice in The Woodlands business and personal relationships are very often dominate over the topics of sales, operations and profitability.

Here’s the question:  How effective is your personal washing machine at two things?  Are you able to keep yourself clean and presentable in your relationships?  Are the people you bring into your life after you put them in your washing machine cleaner and more presentable?

What is the goal of putting yourself and others through the washing machine process?  The goal is to clean away what is on the outside to be able to see what is truly on the inside.  What is on the inside is where the significant relationship connections take place.

What are you looking for on the inside?  You are looking to see, after you and others go through the washing process, if you have similar values.  Differences of opinion are to be expected.  But after going through the washing process if there are differences in values then most likely it is time to not invest further in the relationship.

The Formula For Success | business coaches houston

One of the questions we must answer to have greater success in business and life is this:

How can we change the errors in the formula for failure into the disciplines required in the formula for success? The answer is by making the future part of our current philosophy.

Both success and failure involve future consequences, namely inevitable rewards or unavoidable regrets resulting from past activities.

So what do we need to do daily to be on the path to success? We must develop the discipline to look down the road every day.

Why are new disciplines so important?

They cause us to amend our thinking to keep us on track to creating the successful future we desire. Also, disciplines tend to multiply. We start with one new successful discipline and we build momentum and self-confidence to develop others.

Success is about paying attention to what we are doing each day to move us to the future we desire. Failure, on the other hand, is largely a function of neglect. And, not doing the things we know we should leads to guilt and an erosion of self-confidence.
