Building a Winning Culture: Establishing a Clear Purpose | Personal business coach houston

In previous posts I have looked at building safety and sharing vulnerability which are two components to building a winning culture. A winning culture is one where people want to work at the company they are at. It is where, in your personal relationships that people want to be with you.

The third component to building a winning culture is to establish a clear purpose. I clear purpose is critical to guide the actions and decision making within a company or in relationships.

As a personal business coach in The Woodlands and as a personal business coach in Houston, regardless of where I am at or who I have the privilege of collaborating with, establishing a clear purpose for what we wish to accomplish is critical to our success. In a company, establishing a clear purpose is like a lighthouse. It becomes a beacon of light to guide your thoughts and actions.

Establishing a clear purpose is critical to having a winning culture. First, with a clear purpose that involves others, you can focus on something bigger than yourself. People love to belong or be part of something bigger than themselves. As Helen Keller once said, “Alone we can do so little. Together we can do so much.” A clear purpose is the glue that bonds people together to accomplish something bigger and better than anything they could do on their own.

A clear purpose can be found in the mission statements of many organizations. For example: In Conroe, Texas, the mission statement for the city employees is: “To serve the citizens of Conroe and to exceed their expectations.” With a clear purpose, decisions affecting the citizens are filtered through the prism of their mission statement. And, as the city

Indecision: The Second Enemy From Within | Tips on Self Improvement

Indecision is the second enemy or fear that comes from within. Success, in business and life, more often than not, is not as much about circumstances and things as it is about how we see ourselves.

Once again, just like the first enemy, indifference, in the previous post, there is a time where it is absolutely necessary to be indecisive. Yet, if you let indecision rule you, it creates a fear that will leave you out of more opportunities in business and life than you can imagine. In my coaching practice as a business coach in Woodlands and as a business coach in Houston I have observed the negative effects that the fear generated by indecision can cause.

One person almost starts something. Another person starts it. The person who starts something has increased the likelihood of accomplishing something as opposed to the person who never starts. With indecision, the start is what stops most people.

And, the reason people never get started is they are afraid to make a decision to start and possibly fail. Very often, they want to have all the facts before they make a decision. When it comes to something new that could give your business a boost or a competitive edge, they can never have enough information. As a result, they become continuous students.

They are always learning but never applying what they learn. The miracle process is to take what you learn and apply it. Only then can you even have the possibility of making today better than yesterday.

Even when all the information is at hand and the decision to move forward looks good, people will be indecisive. Why? They think of all the things that might happen to bring failure. At its heart, indecision is a cover for the fear of failure.

There was a sower of seed. He was a good man. He had good seed. He went out in the morning and spread his seed. The birds ate most of the seeds. Later that day he planted on some rocky ground. Some of the seeds sprouted but most never turned into plants. Late in the afternoon the sower planted some seeds on some fertile ground and over time he reaped a bountiful harvest.

How come the sower was successful? He was decisive. He had a definiteness of purpose. When the birds ate the seed, he didn’t chase the birds. When the ground was not very good, he didn’t try to change the ground. He kept on planting. Ultimately, he came upon some good ground for his seed and it returned a big crop.

Doubt: The Third Enemy from Within | Personal Development Training houston

In the previous two posts we have looked at the fear that is based on indifference and indecision. In this post we will look at doubt. And, like the other fears, doubt has a valid time and place. Yet, if you let doubt rule you, your circle of accomplishment and your feelings of self-worth will be very small.

As a personal development business coach in The Woodlands and as a personal development business coach in Houston I have seen doubt sabotage talented people. When I had businesses of my own, some as large as eighty people, I let doubt creep in and keep me from greater accomplishment.

Doubt is highly personal. It is a fear we generate based on our view of ourselves and our world. It is one the hardest enemies to overcome because it demands that we change our perspective, our reality, on ourselves and our world.

If I were to pick one self-improvement tip for success, it would be to always have self-awareness of your doubts. Without it, you will be fighting the same battles and wondering why you are not getting better results.

Doubt, like indifference and indecision is definitely something that can protect you at times. The problem is that it can end up controlling us.

When it comes to doubt it is okay to doubt what you read. Doubt what you hear. Doubt what you see on TV. Doubt the government. And, to doubt each other. But it is not okay, most of the time, to doubt yourself. Doubt will keep you from being better, from accessing better and new opportunities. It will steal energy from your relationships.

Another code word for “doubt” very often is the word “try.” Try is a perfectly good word, yet when it is used in the context of doubt, try can mean someday, sometime or never.

Worry: The Fourth Enemy from Within | Self-Improvement Coaching

In the previous three posts we have looked at the fear that is based on indifference, indecision and doubt. In this post we will look at worry. And, like the other fears, worry has a valid time and place. Yet, when you are consumed with worry it robs you of the energy and focus to accomplish what you have set out to do…

As a business coach in The Woodlands and as a business coach in Houston I have seen worry take people off course and actually make things worse than the worry itself. In my businesses, when I started to hire people and had to make a payroll, I definitely had a great deal of worry. After all, cash flow in the beginning my businesses was not predictable. And sometimes it meant paying everyone except myself. In turn, that created another set of worries.

Worry, like doubt is highly personal. In some ways it is easier to manage. Where doubt is about how we feel about ourselves at the core, worry, very often, comes from external circumstances, people and things. The point is that the fear of worry is easier to see. Doubt has a more internal aspect. And worry and doubt are like cousins. They are related yet they are different.

Worry’s main attribute is that it takes us off course and ends up wasting our time on things, which very often, we have no control over. To have more peace of mind about worry I have seen in my own life and that of others what we must do.

If I were to give a self-improvement tip for peace of mind it is important to remember that 90% of our worries never come to pass. What makes worry so insidious is that it is like cancer cells that can spread into everything that you do.

With worry, the first step is to realistically look at what is worrying you and ask yourself this question, “Do I have control over this?” Most of the time you do not. If you don’t have control that doesn’t necessarily make it any better, but at least you can now focus on your worries where you do have control.
