What Is Your Thinking Hat? | Tips on Self Improvement

What hat are you wearing when you think?  Years ago when I was studying what makes an effective team I came across a book, The Six Thinking Hats by Edward DeBono.  One of the premises was that for effective teamwork that it was important to have different perspectives.  And, as a team leader it is important to have a variety of prisms in thought in order to be able to move forward on a project or task with greater confidence.

First, it is important to understand that each team member has preferred ways of thinking.  As a leader, you may be able to discern what is the best hat for someone to wear.

1. White Hat Thinking-With this thinking you focus on the data available. You analyze from past trends and extrapolate from historical data.

2. Red Hat Thinking- You look at problems using your intuition, not reaction and emotion. Your goal is to understand others’ response intuitively, even if they don’t know your reasoning.

3. Black Hat Thinking- You look for all the bad points in a decision. You look at things cautiously and defensively. You observe why they may not work. Your goal is to highlight the weak points of a plan. With good Black Hat Thinking flaws can be found and corrected that will make the plan stronger.

4. Yellow Hat Thinking- This is about thinking positively. It is the optimistic viewpoint that helps you see all the benefits of the decision and the value in it.

Commandism and Tailism: How to Control A Country or Organization | Tips on Self Improvement

Commandism and Tailism are boundaries that are on purpose poorly defined.  Let’s say you are part of a political movement, or you are working for a company.  The leader of the political movement or a leader in your company asks you to do a special task or project.  You approach it with enthusiasm and get it done on time and better than expected.  Everything should be good.  You should be recognized for your extraordinary efforts.

Yet, you are chastised for being too enthusiastic.  You did your project too well.  The leader feels threatened because he feels that other will look at you as the leader.  He puts you in your place by telling you that he appreciates what you did for him but that you showed too much enthusiasm and care in completing the project.  As a result, you are no longer asked to work on any significant projects or tasks.  This is because you violated the law of Commandism.  You were impetuous.  You took too much command.

Did you?  Here’s the problem, “too much” is never defined.  As a result, the leader controls the situation by eliminating or minimizing those who show, in his opinion, too much leadership.  He can’t stand your threat to his leadership.  As a result, he makes an example of you.  In totalitarian regimes you mysteriously disappear.  In business you either get fired, demoted or keep your title with less responsibilities.  Other people see this and take note.  They are not going to be accused of Commandism.

So, let’s say this did not happen to you but to someone you know in the political movement or at work.  You are watching this. You tell yourself you will not show too much enthusiasm and ingenuity.  After all, Commandism can be fatal.  As time goes on the leader trusts you.  He asks you to do a project or task.

Unsettled | Personal Development Training houston

As of today, November 17, 2020 the political climate is very unsettled in the United States.  The business owners I collaborate with in my business coaching practice in The Woodlands and Houston are moving forward.  But for each it is different.  Some are striding forward with confidence and a “we shall overcome” attitude.  Others are moving forward with less certainty.  In Texas, where I live and work, the economic situation because of the pandemic has been hurtful but overall, we are doing well.

The question is, depending on who wins the election, what are the policies regarding COVID 19 and the economy moving forward.   In Texas, with a great emphasis on oil and gas there is a great deal of uncertainty.  Millions of lives and livelihoods could be affected over the next few years.  Employers and employees feel unsettled.

And the business owners who are not in oil and gas feel unsettled, too.  One thing has become clear during the response to the pandemic is how interrelated all aspects of our economy are.  We are all in the storm together.  Each of our boats is on its journey to get to a safe harbor.  Which boats will make it?  This is unsettling.  Maybe your boat is doing fine at the moment.  But, another boat, another business which is integral to the success of yours is beginning to flounder.  What does this mean for you?  Who knows?

With this unsettled landscape all you can do is focus on the present.  Why?  We have no idea what the future holds. The fundamental reason for this is that we do not know if the election we had for President was honest or dishonest.  If there is an honest outcome that we can believe in that is fine.  But if the outcome is through the channels of dishonesty then we are in for continuous turmoil.  Without honest elections, our form of government is no longer of the people, by the people and for the people.  It is now of the few, by the few and for the few whose desire is for power while mouthing platitudes that it is good for the people.

Dishonesty and cheating never lead to good things in relationships, business, and life.  In our human makeup there is no person who feels good when they discover they are the victim of dishonesty and cheating.
