Tugboats and Trains | Self-improvement business coach

Tugboats and trains perform distinct and separate functions in real life.  Tugboats operate on water.  Their mission is to push, nudge and help direct the barges and large vessels that cannot turn very precisely in the confined areas of a harbor.  Trains are designed to pull and transport heavy loads over steel rails to a specific destination.

In business, to be successful, you must have both the tugboat and train.  You need people who are tugboats.  And you need people who are trains.  As a personal business coach in Houston and The Woodlands, I have seen successful businesses. the necessity for both over a forty-year career in business.

Let’s look first at the train people.  They set a course, they lay down the processes, tracks and they have a clear destination in mind.  They are usually meticulous and very process-oriented.  They want the most direct and shortest path to achieving their business goals.

Tugboat people see the same goal.  They understand the track, course or path to get there but, unlike the train people, they have the ability to make quick adjustments when obstacles and problems, which are inevitable, stand in the way.  After all, if a business was one smooth progression, there would be no need for thinking and we could just put it on autopilot and be successful.

The key to success is the blending of the talents of the tugboat and train people. When they operate in a parallel universe projects almost never get done on time or done at all.  When they come together, it is amazing the speed and quality that is the result of what they are working on together.

Ability, Motivation and Attitude | Self-improvement business coach

Ability is your capability in certain areas.  Motivation determines what you do with your ability.  Attitude determines the quality of your outcomes when you use your ability and are motivated.

In my personal business coaching practice in The Woodlands and in Houston I have observed time and again the connection between these three areas and how they impact individual and team performance.

Ability is important.  It is a great place to start when looking at what you are capable of accomplishing.  But it is not everything.

Motivation, by itself, is not enough.  Motivation gets you going in using your ability, yet it doesn’t guaranty you are headed down the right path.

Attitude is what takes your ability and motivation and keeps it on track.  Attitude says that if the track your ability and motivation are taking you on is not working, that you will try something else.  With the right attitude, you are willing to make the necessary adjustments on your road to success.

Adjustments are not failures.  Adjustments are changes that are necessary to keep you relevant.  If you don’t adjust you fail.  You fail because you are becoming irrelevant.  You are in a race to the bottom.

What Restores Reason? | Tips on Self Improvement

All of us use our reasoning abilities to justify what we think and what we do.  We use our reasoning to solve problems and to embrace opportunities.  We use our reasoning in hundreds of areas.

Yet, when we are in relationships and we give our reasons for doing something and the other party questions or disagrees with our reasoning, things can become very heated.

In my personal business coaching practice in The Woodlands and Houston, I have clients who have the best systems, the best IT, the marketing, and they are profitable. Yet, and it will never be perfect, there are a number of hierarchical and peer relationships that are disjointed.  Disjointed relationships are a drain on productivity.  But since things are good for the bottom line, they are glossed over.  Then one day the tipping point is reached and there is an explosion.  An explosion that could have been prevented. And the explosion can be bad enough to halt productivity.

What can you do about it?  Once again, in the area of relationships, there are many answers.  But these answers are not necessarily solutions.  I am going to share with you something that I have seen work for my clients in my personal business coaching practice.  Does it always work?  Absolutely it does not.  But at the very least it does shine some light on a pathway to a solution.

When things get heated and boil over between people our first response when confronted is the following. Very often, in defense of our reasoning, we give the other person even more logical, reasons, as to why we are right.  This does only one thing.  It heightens the tension and anger.

The Relational Elevator | Personal business coach houston

Self-improvement is your own personal elevator. As you rise to the top you will have to let some people off. When you focus on self-improvement you are always in transition. As you rise, you must let go of those relationships that no longer serve you and the new person you are becoming.

If you don’t, you will end up feeling stuck which eventually robs you of energy and happiness.  Look at your relationships.  Ask yourself, “Who do they have me becoming?”  And then ask yourself, “Is this acceptable?”

If the answer is no, let that person off your relational elevator so you may continue your self-improvement and rise to greater heights. In your personal world, this is easier to do.  But if you take the same approach to self-improvement in the business world you will discover some benefits even though things are more structured, and you have less input into who you are going to be working with.

In my personal business coaching practice in The Woodlands and Houston, I have watched my clients rise on the relational elevator when they focus on their own self-improvement.

Interestingly, the problem a client has is never a lack of knowledge or expertise in what they are expected to do.  The challenge is always in the relationships with the people they must interact with and be part of a team.

In business, more often than not, you do not have a choice as to who is going to be part of your relational elevator.  But you do have a choice as to what to do about it.  You can either try to change them, which almost never works, or you can focus on your own self-improvement and go to work on yourself.

Improve Your Relationship With Yourself | Self Improvement coaching

Holding on to what you cannot change is like wrestling with your shadow. It makes for a frustrating relationship with yourself. The shadow is visible, but you will be continually frustrated and unhappy because you cannot control or change it.

In your business and personal world, you must know when you are wrestling with your shadow. Your shadow is all the things you cannot control.

In my personal business coaching in The Woodlands and Houston, very often I have clients that are wrestling with shadows.  I have certainly wrestled with shadows.  My shadows can be doubt, indecision, and timidity to name a few.  They are valid as long as I wrestle with them.  The moment I let go, stop wrestling with them, they lose their power to distort the picture I have of myself and my world.

How do I let go?  First, what I am about to share does not always work.  But when you have a method for dealing with your shadows you start having confidence which brings a greater degree of happiness.  That alone puts me in a better place.

To get rid of my shadows, I journal.  I get deep inside myself to discover what is truly driving my fear, the fear that creates shadows.  My biggest challenge is to borrow trouble and turmoil in the future before it ever arrives.  One of the things I journal about is the present and all I have to be grateful for.  When I am grateful, I feel better, more at peace, and am willing, now that my foundation feels more solid, to overcome my doubts, indecisiveness, and timidity.

Overcoming your shadows is an inside job.  Be truthful with yourself.  It is the only place to start. Journaling helps me do that.

Some of the happiest moments in your life will come when you let go of wrestling with your shadows. Show the courage to let go.  How do you do that?
